California Duck Days, Friday, February 24th, 2006 Saturday, February 25th, 2006, Description: Come celebrate at California Duck Days, a wetlands festival in the heart of the Pacific Flyway. A gala reception for everyone interested in wetlands and wildlife will launch the festivities on Friday evening. In addition to refreshments and good company, the reception will feature an outstanding wildlife art exhibit by Yolo County high school students. On Saturday, the festival will feature one full day of field trips and workshops at the Yolo Wildlife Area Headquarter facility in South Davis. Among the dozen field trips to be offered are ’Local Owling’ and ’Wildlife Friendly Farming at the Conaway Ranch’. Workshops will be held throughout the day and include ’Waterfowl Drawing’, ’Bird Dog Demonstrations’ and ’Bird Box Building’. The always-popular Mallard ducklings will be on display as well as the Junior Duck Stamp Art Collection. Admission: The cost for the CA Duck Days is $20 per person, and children under 16 are free when accompanied by an adult. All participants must pre-register due to limited space on field trips and workshops. For more information and registration materials, please call the Yolo Basin Foundation at 530-757-3780.

Central Valley Birding Symposium:

The Central Valley Bird Club will host the Ninth Annual Central Valley Birding Symposium Nov. 17-20, at the Radisson Hotel in Stockton, CA. There will be field trips, workshops, and a Birding Nature Fair and Art Show with over 25 vendors selling nature-related items. Thursday/s keynote speaker is naturalist, Jules Evens, presenting “The Birds of the Central Valley,” using master photographer Ian Tate’s photos. Friday is “Hot on the Trail of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker” by Bobby Harrison and CVBC’s very own John Trochet. Yes, these guys searched for decades and saw the “Grail Bird” before the rest of us knew they still existed! Saturday night finds us in the company of Don Roberson. He has a Website devoted to “The History of California Birding”, recounting the pre-computer days where dozens of eager (and now legendary) birders scoured the state and made history. Some of them may join Don and share in the discussion-many of them will be in attendance. Other events include workshops such as “Parts is More than Parts: Boning up on Bird Identification” by Kimball Garrett and “Shorebird ID Workshop” by Joe Morlan. There are also regional programs on topics such as Sacramento’s Purple Martins and the Sutter Buttes. Details are on the website: http://cvbs.org or contact Frances Oliver at 209.369.2010.
