We are going to make our annual jaunt to the southern refuges, and we are going to do it in the reverse direction, starting from the Paicines Reservoir. Meet Saturday at the Paicines Reservoir, just south of the town of Tres Pinos. The reservoir is on the west side of Highway 25, south of the town of Hollister. From the reservoir we will proceed down Little Panoche Road, stopping at the usual places looking for Bald Eagles, Lewis Woodpeckers, Mountain Bluebirds, Vesper and Lark Sparrows, and those Mountain Plovers. We also expect to find a good assortment of raptors.

At this time we plan on having dinner at The Wool Growers Inn in Los Banos (Basque.) Campers can spend the night at the Basalt Campground or other campgrounds around San Luis Reservoir including the Medieros area at San Luis Reservoir. Motels in the area include Motel 6 (209-826-6644)Holiday Express (209-826-8282), or the Best Western, located in Santa Nella, as suggestions.

Sunday will be spent looking at waterfowl, sorting through ducks, geese and cranes. We will bird the refuges, including Merced NWR and possibly both San Luis and Los Banos, but bird O'Neil Forebay first. Meet at the O'Neil Forebay Wildlife Area. To reach the O'Neil Forebay parking area, proceed south about 1 mile from Santa Nella on SR-33. If coming from the Basalt Campground, proceed north on SR-33. The parking area is just north of the canal and is signed. If time permits, we will go home via Santa Fe Grade Road.

Trip will go rain or shine with only heavy flooding canceling.
