Volunteer Opportunities
Reward! Great personal satisfaction for helping locate the following wanted persons!
Field Trip Chair: Organize field trips for each year, prepare a list of trips for the each of eight newsletters and hold an annual planning meeting of the Field Trips committee. Publicity Chair: We need a person who can supply Ohlone announcements to newspapers and other media. Activist: attend government meetings and alert others to local Audubon issues. Art Director: Establish consistent, eyecatching, theme for official OAS publications. Art Consultant: advise on publication design, chapter keepsake and clothing items. Kite Call Folder: Help fold and address the Kite Call newsletter. This only takes 1 or two hours and you get a chance to meet other Ohlone volunteers and chat about birds and birding!
Contact Evelyn Cormier if you have some free time and want to help.
Opportunities and Challenges Ohlone Audubon Society now can have a permanent place for public exposure at the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center. We can rent the space near the entrance, behind the Center’s store counter, where the HSIC library is located. The store sells items of interest to Hayward is open for public use when the building is open, presently on weekends. It would give us an opportunity to interact with visitors to the HSIC. We could augment the existing shelves to house the Bette Wentzel Memorial Library. It is a great place to see birds. That’s the opportunity. Now for the challenge: we would need to have a volunteer to be there on weekends to greet the public and allow access to the BWML stacks. Will you help? Activities where volunteers are needed. Volunteer activities include setting up table displays, making brochures and handouts available, sharing information about birds and nature, enjoying pleasant conversation with visitors, and taking down the displays at the end of the event. On a scale of difficulty, this is easy! April is Audubon Month to commemorate John J. Audubon's birthday, and also the month that Earth Day will be celebrated in a number of communities. May is American Wetlands Month and time to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day. Chapter volunteers are needed to staff our table at events all year long. If you can help even if for only a few hours, contact Evelyn Cormier.
Services Needed Office and Library Space: About 150 square feet for desk and library shelves; ideally, another 150 square feet for Board and committee meetings. Contact Evelyn Cormier if you can contribute any of these services.
