SUMMARY:Middle Harbor Shoreline Park
DESCRIPTION:Middle Harbor Shoreline Park\nSunday\, August 16\, 10am – 12:30pm\nLeader: Bob Toleno \nThis 38-acre park opened to the public in 2004\, and is an excellent example of how former industrial sites can be transformed through habitat restoration. Shorebirds will be the main focus of the trip\, with a possibility for some rarities at this time of year (Baird’s Sandpiper and Bar-tailed Godwit have been found at this location.) Terns\, gulls\, Ospreys\, pelicans\, and other piscivores will also be seen\, as well as maybe some rocky shore shorebirds\, like turnstones or Wandering Tattler\, all with the photogenic background of the San Francisco skyline. \nDirections: Take I-880 north toward Oakland to the 7th St exit toward West Grand Ave. Turn left onto 7th Street and head west to the stoplight at Middle Harbor Rd. Proceed through the intersection and take the first right turn into the MHSP parking lot.

SUMMARY:Birds of Uruguay with Viviana Wolinsky & Steve Hunter
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, Sept 1\, 2026\nTime: 7:30 PM Via Zoom \nThis presentation offers a preview of what to expect on a birding trip to Uruguay. While the country is roughly the size of Washington state with a climate similar to California’s\, it possesses a wide range of habitats\, including the Pampas\, Atlantic Forest\, savannas\, wetlands\, and palm tree forests. This diversity allows for a great variety of bird species to be seen easily across short distances. Uruguay is also a vital feeding and breeding destination for many migratory species. \nViviana Wolinsky and Steve Hunter began birding within the last decade\, combining this new passion with their love of travel. Steve focuses on bird photography and provided all the bird images for the presentation. Viviana has a life-list of over 3000 birds\, more than half of which she observed in South America. She has visited Uruguay twice for birding\, most recently on the Golden Gate Birding Alliance’s (GGBA) “Total Uruguay” trip\, and currently holds the number 123 spot on the eBird lifetime list for the country. \nBoth are active GGBA volunteers. Viviana serves as an assistant instructor for Steve’s intermediate birding and sparrow classes. Together\, they have led numerous local field trips and a special Birdathon trip to Colorado. Viviana also serves as the co-compiler for the Oakland Christmas Bird Count.

DESCRIPTION:Don Edwards NWR\nTuesday\, September 8\, 9:30am – noon\nLeader: Bob Toleno \nFounded in 1974 as the first urban National Wildlife Refuge established in the United States\, Don Edwards NWR protects sensitive bayshore habitat\, stretching from the salt ponds near Coyote Hills all the way to the shoreline of Sunnyvale. On this trip\, we’ll walk along the Newark Slough Trail that runs around the pond just south of the Dumbarton Bridge. We’ll primarily be looking at shorebirds that visit this pond and use it as a roosting spot at high tide. We’ll walk about 3 miles out and back over mostly flat trails to the roost. There we’ll see shorebirds of all sizes\, including Marbled Godwits\, Short-billed Dowitchers\, Western Sandpipers\, and maybe even some Red Knots\, or possibly some rarer shorebirds. \nDirections: From I-880\, take the Decoto Rd/CA-84 exit toward the Dumbarton Bridge. From 84\, take the Thornton Rd exit and turn left. Continue for almost a mile then turn right on Marshlands Rd\, then drive about half a mile and turn left into the large parking lot.

SUMMARY:Las Gallinas & Healdsburg Vaux’s Swift Spectacle
DESCRIPTION:Las Gallinas & Healdsburg Vaux’s Swift Spectacle\nSaturday\, September 19\, 3:00pm – sunset\nLeaders: Bob Toleno & Juli Chamberlin \nJoin us to see thousands of migrating Vaux’s Swifts entering a single chimney at Rio Lindo Adventist Academy in Healdsburg at sunset! It’s truly a spectacle not to be missed. We’ll meet first at Las Gallinas in Marin County\, where we’ll walk a flat trail\, birding the ponds and marshes. If we’re very lucky\, we might spot a Least Bittern. Then we’ll continue about an hour north to Healdsburg\, allowing some time for folks to grab dinner along the way\, then meet at Rio Lindo around 6:45\, in time for sunset at 7:15 PM. The sky will be swirling with birds as they descend into the chimney. The field trip ends after the swifts have entered the chimney. \nDirections to Las Gallinas: Take I-580 west and cross the Richmond Bridge to connect to 101 north. In about four miles\, exit at Lucas Valley Rd/Smith Ranch Rd\, and turn right on Smith Ranch Rd. Continue for about half a mile then turn right to stay on Smith Ranch and continue to the parking lot at the end. Directions to Rio Lindo Academy: Take 101 N for about 60 miles to Exit 502 for Healdsburg Ave\, where you’ll turn right\, then turn right again onto Bailhache Ave. Continue until the name changes to Rio Lindo Ave. The road winds up into the hills\, and in 3 miles you’ll reach the Academy’s main entrance. Follow the swift signs to reach the chimney\, and park on the right. Bring a folding chair and enjoy the show.

SUMMARY:Point Reyes Rare Bird Round-up
DESCRIPTION:Point Reyes Rare Bird Round-up\nThursday\, September 24\, 7am – 4pm\nLeaders: Bob Toleno & Juli Chamberlin \nEarly autumn can be an excellent time for migrants and rarities at the birding hotspots in outer Point Reyes National Seashore. This all-day\, caravan-style birding trip will visit some of the prime birding locations on the outer point\, such as the fish docks\, lighthouse\, various ranches\, and Drake’s Beach\, where we’ll have lunch. We’ll plan to finish the day at the RCA building cypresses and the Inverness Tennis Club. \nWe will leave from Bovine Bakery in Point Reyes Station at 7:15am so we can get to the outer point as early as possible. You should plan to arrive at 7am if you want to get coffee and delicious pastries from the bakery. Wear layers—the outer point can be chilly! Bring lunch\, liquids\, sunscreen\, and a full gas tank. We will try to bring as few cars as possible to the outer point because parking is very limited in places. \nDirections: Take the Richmond Bridge to Hwy 101N\, take Lucas Valley Rd exit and turn left\, then turn right on Nicasio Valley Rd\, left on Petaluma-Point Reyes Rd\, and left on Shoreline Hwy (Hwy 1). The address of Bovine Bakery is 11315 Shoreline Hwy\, Point Reyes Station\, CA.

SUMMARY:Rodeo Lagoon & Hawk Hill
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 5\, 8am – 1pm\nLeader: Bob Toleno\nbo*@****no.com\n\nJoin us in the Marin Headlands for fall migration. We’ll start the morning at Rodeo Lagoon\, birding the willows on the south side\, mostly looking for songbird migrants and rarities. We may also check the north side of the lagoon\, if we have time. At around 11am\, as the day warms up\, we’ll drive a short distance to Hawk Hill to spend some time scouring the sky for migrating raptors.\n\nOverlooking the Golden Gate Bridge\, Hawk Hill sits near the southernmost end of the Marin County peninsula. Late September is the peak of raptor migration\, and because they prefer not to fly over water\, the peninsula acts as a “funnel” to concentrate them over this point. 17 different species have been documented migrating over Hawk Hill\, including some not usually seen near the coast\, like Swainson’s\, Ferruginous\, and Broad-winged Hawks\, and even the occasional Prairie Falcon. Bring water\, sunscreen\, and a scope if you have one. We’ll watch the raptors fly out over the Golden Gate. Many of the birds will be distant\, but leaders will help teach you how to ID raptors by shape. \n \nDirections: Take the Richmond Bridge to Hwy 101 south\, then exit on Alexander Rd (exit 442). Make a left on Bunker Rd\, go through the tunnel\, drive 2 miles\, then make a left on Field Rd\, where you’ll immediately see a parking lot. Make sure not to park in the 30-minute limit spaces.

SUMMARY:Big Break Regional Shoreline
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 18\, 9am – noon\nLeader: Bill Hoppes \nho********@***il.com\nBig Break Regional Shoreline has an excellent mix of habitats. First off\, it has one of East Bay Regional Park District’s Visitors Centers as well as an excellent 3-D model of the SF Bay and Delta. We will first visit the fishing platform that has excellent views of the “Big Break” and the Carquinez Strait. After that\, we will follow trails that edge willow runs\, grasslands and sloughs. Birding is always good here and we have good chances to see anything from Sandhill Cranes to White-faced Ibis to our own White-tailed Kite. Bring a spotting scope\, if you have one. \n\n\nDirections: Take I-880 north to CA-24 east to I-680 north to CA-242 north to CA-4 east to CA-160 toward Sacramento. SUMMARY:Hayward Regional Shoreline: Longspurs and Shorebirds
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 26\, 2024\, 8:30am – 11am\nLeader: Bob Toleno\n\nIn mid-autumn\, very large grassy fields around the Bay Area can attract migrating grassland birds\, like pipits\, meadowlarks\, and most exciting of all\, longspurs. At Hayward Shoreline\, the tiny hill known to birders as “Mount Trashmore” is one of the best places to see these birds.\n\nWe’ll meet at 8:30 and walk out to Hayward Landing first to scope through the shorebirds there. Marbled Godwits and Willets should be numerous\, and we may even see something more unusual\, like a Surfbird or Ruddy Turnstone. After that\, we’ll walk the grass of Mount Trashmore\, listening and looking for Lapland Longspurs\, or maybe even a rarer longspur or a Snow Bunting\, if we’re extremely lucky.\n\nDirections: Exit I-880 at Winton Ave. and head west all the way to the end. Meet at the paved parking lot inside the gate (not the dirt lot outside the gate). A restroom is available at that lot. Rain cancels.

This tour explores those extremes\, from moist fir and aspen forests in the Sierra Nevada to the dry bristlecone pine forest of the White Mountains\, from the rich lowland riparian areas of the Owens Valley to the natural and artificial oases of the driest desert on the continent\, Death Valley. \nBreeding birds we’ll see on this trip include Gambel’s Quail\, Black Swift\, Black-backed Woodpecker\, Brown-crested Flycatcher\, Plumbeous Vireo\, Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay\, Juniper Titmouse\, Verdin\, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher\, Cactus Wren\, LeConte’s Thrasher\, Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch\, Black-throated Sparrow\, Scott’s Oriole\, and Lucy’s Warbler. \nBesides just breeding birds\, late May is prime time to find migrants\, especially vagrants from eastern North America. As nocturnal migrants fly over the deserts\, when the sun rises\, the artificial and natural oases act as magnets for these hungry birds. Birders from all around California go to Death Valley each spring and fall to experience this phenomenon. \nThe cost will be $975 per person for a shared room\, $1\,225 for a single. This will be a caravan-style trip\, and carpooling will be facilitated. Limit 10 participants. This tour sold out the past two years! SUMMARY:Southeast Arizona - Monsoon Season in the Sky Islands
DESCRIPTION:Leaders: Bob Toleno & Juli Chamberlin\nJuly 31 – August 8\, 2027\n \nIn the southeast corner of Arizona\, a number of tiny mountain ranges rise up out of the desert\, giving the region its nickname: “The Sky Islands.”  In the summer\, when the intermittent monsoon rains fall and create a “second spring\,” this region becomes a biodiversity hotspot. This tiny area hosts many bird species that can’t be seen anywhere else in the US\, and should be on every birder’s bucket list.\n \nThis eight-day tour will explore four of those ranges: Santa Catalina\, Santa Rita\, Huachuca\, and Chiricahua Mountains. Up to 15 species of hummingbird can be seen at this time of year\, including Rivoli’s\, Berylline\, Violet-crowned\, and Lucifer Hummingbirds\, plus Blue-throated Mountain-gem. Other regional specialties we’ll search for: Montezuma Quail\, Inca Dove\, Zone-tailed Hawk\, Coppery-tailed Trogon\, Greater Pewee\, Thick-billed Kingbird\, Mexican Jay\, Mexican Chickadee\, Bridled Titmouse\, Olive Warbler\, Rufous-winged Sparrow\, Five-striped Sparrow\, Chihuahuan Meadowlark\, Grace’s Warbler\, Red-faced Warbler\, and Varied Bunting. Some wonderful night birds we might see include Buff-collared Nightjar\, Mexican Whip-poor-will\, Elf Owl\, and Whiskered Screech-Owl.\n \nExact costs are TBD\, but probably about $2\,500-2\,700 per person for shared room and about $500 more for a single. Costs include all lodging\, food\, and transportation while on the tour (but not including flights to and from Tucson). Maximum tour size of 9; minimum 7. Sign up below if you’re interested.
